Our History
Established in 1972 by
Richard (Dick) Wachter, and engineer and entrepreneur, American Marine began
with small outboard repairs in the family’s East Northport garage. Dick wanted to grow a business in an industry
that both he and his oldest son Chris, who was 14 at the time, had a passion. Father and son enjoyed boating themselves and
turning wrenches in the garage to make ends meet. Chris joined his father full time straight
out of high school. As business grew the
building on Jericho Turnpike was purchased in 1978, where American Marine still
resides. Dick and Chris continued to repair
and maintain local boats and outboards with a small crew of mechanics, growing
the business as Chris gradually took the helm and Dick retired in 1987.
Chris Wachter, a 6-pack
Captain’s License holder like his father, has been a Long Island boater his
whole life. With roots on both the north
and south shores, he and his family have taken of advantage of all Long
Island’s precious Sound and Great South Bay have to offer. He constantly shares his local knowledge,
passion and many years of valuable boating experience with his customers and
crew. Naturally, the family’s love of
the sea did not evade Chris’s children Keith and Janine, the third generation
of Wachter’s to carry on the business and serve American Marine’s valued
customers.
President of American Marine
today, Keith knew from an early age that he would one day take the reins and
bring the family business to an exciting new level. He began learning engine and boat mechanics
as soon as he was able to hold a wrench.
Keith’s reputation as a kind, honest and fair guy is the backbone of
American Marine’s current success and what keeps customers coming back season
after season. He is committed to ensuring
our family’s values and standards are upheld with every boat, motor or trailer
we sell or repair. Keith and his family,
which includes 3 little sons, get out to enjoy the water as often as possible alongside
the local customers and community that we continue to serve and keep safe.
Keith’s sister Janine also
joined the crew at American Marine in 2016 as Store Manager. A 2006 graduate of the United States Merchant
Marine Academy and First Assistant Engineer of unlimited horsepower vessels,
Janine has experience in the maritime industry that brings a new perspective to
the family business. She is looking
forward to helping Long Islanders find the service and parts they need to keep
their boats in the water and smiles on their family’s faces.
It is the pleasure of the
Wachter family to provide Long Islander’s with a friendly, fair and quality
place for all your boating needs. The
crew at American Marine is committed to keeping you and your family out on the
water and safe through the boating season and for years to come!
